Camelot House

This well-built, mid-century London purpose-built property was given a complete refresh — and a new lease of life

OVERVIEW

Camelot House in Camden is a light-filled property with well-proportioned rooms; just a stone's throw from green spaces, children’s parks, and three tube stations, we knew this property would have huge appeal to professionals and families – but we had work to do first.

CHALLENGE

This apartment block dates back to the 1930s. Other than cosmetic updates, it had been left largely untouched. Beneath the chipboard wallpaper, we could see the property needed to be stripped back to allow for new plumbing and electrics. The bathroom was tired, the kitchen lacked personality, and there was limited storage. Some London homebuyers worry that apartments such as Camelot House suffer from sound problems, and that worry is well-founded in many cases, where thin walls between the apartments used to be standard.  Those thin walls also mean that you can’t install fire doors to the original frames, something that was high on our agenda.

WORK

Upgraded heating and electrics are a must in a property such as this one. Not only to enjoy the benefits of constant hot water and on demand heating, but for safety reasons too. We installed new electrics and plumbing – including spotlights and a mains pressure tank. To help soundproof the apartment, we dropped the ceilings and increased the thickness of the walls — which allowed us to fit fire doors for safety.

Bathrooms should be a place to unwind and feel comfortable, but with a narrow bath and drab decor, this space was, originally, quite the opposite. With experts from RUE Bathroom, we redesigned the space and installed a wider bath that made it easier to shower, and gave the walls a fresh new look.

Storage was an issue throughout the apartment. We dramatically increased the capacity  with purpose-built wardrobes and cupboards, a new utility room, and worked with the RUE Kitchen team to design a space-saving, U-shaped kitchen.

RESULT

Through clever storage solutions, plumbing and electrical upgrades, a reimagined kitchen and bathroom, spotlights, and sound-reducing walls, this property is not only functional but is also aesthetically pleasing. Now a modern property with a spacious kitchen at its heart, it’s a place to entertain guests and enjoy time with the family: it’s a home to be proud of.
